Things To Do - anytime
Put together specially for Carmi Kids
I have put this idea paper together for all our students and families. We hope you have fun with it. Some projects will need parent help. Please monitor your kids while they are checking out the websites as we have not checked them all thoroughly.

FUN STUFF TO DO AT HOME
Make A Volcano (with a little adult help)
A real volcano in your own back yard? Why not, It's easy and all the ingredients are likely already in your kitchen.
You'll need - 1 empty soup can, red food colouring, white vinegar, baking soda.
1) Place soup can on the ground outdoors in an area where it's okay to make a little mess (ASK an ADULT).
2) Build a mound around the can using soil, sand, leaves, clay and mud. Leave the top of the can uncovered so that you can pour in the ingredients.
3) Fill the can one half to three quarters full with vinegar. Add a few drops of red food colouring. Then get your friends and camera ready.
4) Add a spoonful of baking soda. As the chemical reaction between the acid and baking soda occurs watch the lava flow down the sides of the volcano.
5) Repeat as many times as you want. Try varying the amount of vinegar to see if you can make the most realistic eruption. You can place action figures, plastic houses, trees, animals and other props around your volcano and film the action. Remember to add your own side effects.
Adult Fun: use vinegar, baking soda and boiling water to clear out and freshen a clogged drain. Soda around the hole and carefully pour hot water from kettle and vinegar into sink listen to it fizzle.
Make your own GORP ** allergy alert
Gorp is an acronym for 'Good Old Raisins and Peanuts' Can make this up easily and quickly. Be sure to have enough to share, great energy snack!
What you'll need 1 cup peanuts, 1 cup raisins, ½ cup carob or chocolate chips (optional), ½ cup dried banana chips, sunflower seeds, other nuts, corm chips, pretzel bits, or whatever else tickles your taste buds. Medium to large plastic zip lock bag.
What to do: Place all your ingredients in the plastic bag and seal it tightly. Then shake, shake, shake! (the bag, not your body). Grab your bag of Gorp and a buddy and go for a fun, safe walk outside in the fresh air.
Rock Your World
This is a science experiment you can really sink your teeth into (brush your teeth afterwards). The trick is to have patience the crystals will start forming within an hour and continue for several days. Hold out for the bigger crystals if you can!
What you'll need clean microwave safe jar (pasta sauce jars are good), 4 cups granulated sugar, 1 cup water, oven mitts, long wooden spoon, food colouring (optional), 2-4 pieces of string cut into 6 inch lengths , pencil.
What to do:
1) Make sure the jar is clean ( you can eat your crystals after)
2) Mix 2 cups of the sugar and 1 cup water in jar. Microwave for 1 minute 30 seconds on high. Take the jar out of the microwave using oven mitts. The jar will be hot the water should be hot but not boiling.
3) Stir mixture carefully with spoon until the sugar is completely dissolved. You should not be able to see any sugar crystals at the bottom of the jar. Add a few drops of food colouring to make it look even cooler.
4) Add the rest of the sugar and stir till dissolved. You may need to microwave it again for another 30 seconds if the sugar crystals don't disappear.
5) Tie the end of each string to the pencil so that they hang off the pencil. Space the string at least ½ inch apart.
6) Balance pencil across the mouth of the jar so that the ends of the string are dangling in the sugar water.
7) Place the jar where it won't get knocked over. In about an hour you should see the crystals start to form.
What makes the crystals form? If you look carefully at the sugar before you dissolve it each grain looks like a tiny crystal. As the water evaporates the sugar crystals climb first to the string and then to each other, combining to make larger crystals.
Raisin Rodeo
You will need: Tall glass of seltzer water or club soda and raisins.
What to do: Place 4-6 raisins inside glass of water or soda. They will sink to the bottom. Watch closely as they all start rising to the top. The raisins will bob up and down in the glass like bucking broncos in a rodeo. If you're with a friend each of you can pick a raisin and have races - see whose raisin goes up and down the most or whose stays up or down the longest.
What causes the raisins to rise? Watch closely and you will see bubbles form on the raisins at the bottom of the glass that lifts the raisins up. As the bubbles burst, the raisins fall down to the bottom.
Jigsaw Jones Zig Zag Code
1) Print your message out eg: 'Have a Fun Day'
2) Then print your message the 'up/down' way. eg: 'hvaudy' 'aefna' Which
means first letter on the top line, second on the bottom line, third on the top etc.
3) Write long and undecodable letters to your friends.
ENJOY!
